So I’m working at my desk the other night, deep in thought either doing homework or working on a project for work or who knows what. All of a sudden, this silly little praying mantis jumps onto my shoulder from nowhere. Here he is, sitting on my right shoulder, just kind of minding his own business but certainly interested in the face that is now gazing upon his two little beady eyes. I’m a little bit startled—you know, as often as manti jump upon my shoulder, the situation seems to push a small amount of adrenaline through the body. So, calmly and peaceful, I attempt to pick him off and put him somewhere else, like the desk. Yeah, smart move. He actually made it there himself by exercising his little wings. I didn’t even actually know that manti had wings until tonight.
So, there he is sitting on papers on my desk just hanging out. So I decide that it’s time for Mr. Mantis to “go home”, so I pick up the papers and try to retreat to the back door with him. However, he seems to grab hold of my overhead lamp and play around on there for a while, which lent itself to some amusing conversation between myself and him. “So, uhh… what are you doing up there, huh? You like the light? Good.” Sorry, it’s very difficult to have deep conversation with these little guys.
Finally though, I lower the desk lamp down to the desk and he moves back onto the paper. Realizing the time as come to act, I pick up the paper with him on it and move toward the back door of the house. All the while, he knows something is up because he moves from the edge of the paper to where my hand has grasped it in an attempt to find more stable ground. Fortunately, I got outside in time and he jumped onto my nice little wooden stairs just outside the door.
Quite the lovely experience, if I do say so myself. He provided an entertaining break from homework, at least.
